Peter Gabriel's New Blood Tour Visiting Select Venues

Peter Gabriel's New Blood Tour Visiting Select Venues

Peter Gabriel is launching a very unusual tour in 2010.  First, Gabriel tickets will be sold for just nine dates spread out across two continents.  Second, the eccentric rock icon is touring with only an orchestra—no drums and no guitars.

This unique set-up is supporting the release of his eighth studio album, Scratch My Back (February, 2010).  The album was recorded at George Martin's Air Lyndhurts Studios and produced by Bob Ezrin.  Like the tour, the album has Gabriel singing along side a full orchestra with nary a rock band in sight.

Scratch My Back features Gabriel covering 12 songs by 12 different artists (a full track listing is below).  The idea is to have all the artists he covers cover one of his songs.  Then those songs will be on an album called I'll Scratch Yours.

For instance, On Scratch My Back Gabriel covers Radiohead's "Street Spirit (Fade Out)."  Meanwhile, Radiohead is planning on covering Gabriel's 1982 song, "Wallflower" (fans, including the author of this post, were hoping for "Shock the Monkey").

"Thom wanted to do a version of 'Wallflower,' which I'm very curious to hear," said Gabriel in a podcast. "I think that was an important track for him when he was 14."

Gabriel is calling his upcoming trek, "The New Blood Tour."  It's slated to begin March 22 in Paris.  From there he plays two nights in both Berlin and London.

The North American leg, if you want to call three cities and four dates a "leg," commences April 28.

Scratch My Back is Gabriel's first studio album his 2002 offering, Up.  His last tour came in the spring of 2009 when he performed a series of shows in Mexico and South America.

Having already logged a year on the road, Nickelback is extending their Dark Horse Tour with another pass through North America in 2010. The 30 dates kick off on April 6 in London, ON, and wind down on June 3 in Vancouver, BC.

Although the bulk of the dates will be in the U.S., eight of them are slated for north of the border. Nickelback will be Toronto and Montreal as well. International performances will provide a ramp up to the spring swing.

Nickelback's sixth studio outing, the double-platinum Dark Horse, was released in November, 2008 and still holds a place on the Billboard charts after debuting and topping out at number two. The latest single, “Never Gonna Be Alone,” is currently making noise at radio.

Over one million fans attended the band's 2009 Dark Horse shows, leading to a gross of nearly $50 million and the 11th most successful tour of the year. The 2010 run is on track to top those numbers.

Nickelback was also recently anointed by Billboard as the group of the decade.

Supporting acts for the 2010 dates include Breaking Benjamin, Shinedown and Sick Puppies.

James Taylor and Carole King Team For World Tour

James Taylor and Carole King Team For World Tour

James Taylor used to be a big deal.  In 1971, he was on the cover of Time Magazine heralded as the vanguard of the singer-songwriter era.  In fact, the term "singer-songwriter" was probably coined just for him.  A year before appearing on the cover of Time, Taylor was propelled into stardom with the release of his seminal album, Sweet Baby James (issued on the Beatles' Apple Records label).

Carole King wrote several successful songs in 1960's including "Will You Love Me Tomorrow," "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," and "The Loco-Motion."  She broke through as a performer with her 1971 juggernaut, Tapestry.  That little album eventually sold 25 million copies and made King the first woman to ever win four Grammy Awards in one year.

Both artists began their careers in the 1960's but rose to fame in the early 1970's.  That odd period of popular music right after the Beatles broke up; rock was still reeling from the deaths of several of its popular icons, and the Rolling Stones were being ravaged by drug use.  Nonetheless, Taylor and King emerged from that turbulent time as folk music's quintessential singer-songwriters.

Now in 2010, Taylor and King are teaming to sell tickets for a world tour.  The duo start their trek in March with shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.  The North American leg of their sojourn begins May 7 in Portland and is scheduled to wrap in early July.

Fans can attain Taylor and King tickets for a concert in Bostona concert in Philadelphia, and a concert in New York—just to name a few of the cities they'll be visiting.

This outing is billed as the "Troubadour Reunion Tour."  It celebrates the 40th anniversary of the duo's "historic" performance at the famed Hollywood night club.

The genesis of this world tour stems from a series of shows the couple did in 2007 to celebrate the Troubadour's 50th anniversary.  The six-shows were so well received that Taylor and King decided that when their 40th anniversary rolled around they would honor the event with a full-fledged tour.

However, the "troubadour" angle is nothing more than a cheap excuse.

Who tours to commemorate a 40-year-old concert in Los Angeles that no one remembers?  There were probably a thousand people in attendance and half of those were too stoned to even notice who was on stage.

With Taylor, 67, and King, 61, about to walk off into the Sunset (the Sunset Retirement Center) what better way to squeeze some more cash out of their storied careers then with a hyped-up world tour.

Sadly, Taylor and King don't need an excuse to tour.  If they want to play a concert in Washington D.C. or if Taylor and King want to perform in Toronto, let them.  They've more than earned it.  Just do us all a favor and don't contrive some phony excuse when they do.

Additional dates may be added to the schedule (they're going to wait and see how Taylor's hip holds up) and some shows may be moved due to the NBA playoffs.  That won't be a problem for the concerts in Nashville or Seattle.

With three Grammy awards and an Emmy on his shelf and a new album in stores, Harry Connick, Jr. is taking his show on the road.

Backed by an orchestra, Connick will play selections from his new Grammy-nominated release, Your Songs, as well as standards and tunes from throughout his career like “It Had to Be You” and “A Wink and a Smile.”

A show like this deserves to be seen in a great venue and there are plenty on the schedule. A consummate performer, Connick hits Santa Barbara's glorious Arlington Theatre on January 26. San Diego's wonderful Copley Symphony Hall hosts Harry and the gang two nights later on January 28.

Having sold more than 25 million records worldwide puts Connick in a league, not so much of his own, but definitely of only a few. The New Orleans native and occasional actor has also had 10 releases top the jazz charts, more than any other artist in U.S. history.

At Baltimore's Lyric Opera House, Connick will surely delight fans just as he did recently at the 32nd Annual Kennedy Center Honors.

Feeling romantic? Spend Valentine's Day with Connick in Jacksonville, Florida and let him melt your heart with his renditions of the Lennon/McCartney classic "And I Love Her" and Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love With You."

The Your Songs tour will touch down on both coasts with Connick's 13-city run ending in Virginia Beach on February 19.
